Schubert Chapter 1There was a knock at the door. Schubert looked up from the piano for the first time in several hours, listening to see if anyone would answer. After a minute or two he sighed and eased himself up from the piano, making his way through the stacks of papers piled on his floor. As he reached the hall he could make out a shadow through the window, judging from the cap some kind of military officer. This was strange, had an soldier ever come to the house before? Not that he could remember but this was Berlin after all. The figure banged loudly again. Schubert bit his lip and wrung his hands together before finally pulling the door open.
